History
The story of MYVI bagan with the New Life Foundation’s orphanage project in Mingaladon, Yangon, back in 2005/2006, where we quickly realised we needed to provide training and find orphans jobs as they became adults. We put together a team who looked at many different training restaurant projects in Vietnam and Cambodia, searching for a self-sustainable model. Friends International in Cambodia operated several training restaurants that were self-sustaining, selling mainly to foreign tourists.
We then built a training restaurant in Bagan, central Myanmar. We started training students in hospitality alongside running the restaurant, which provided the income stream we needed to train, feed and house the students. We finished building in 2015 and opened with 16 students; by 2019 we had 30 students and were 90% self-funding through restaurant sales to tourists.
COVID and the conflict meant we had no more tourists or customers, so we had to change our operation. We became a hospitality training school and, to fund ourselves, contracted to INGOs — teaching hospitality courses for Swisscontact and Plan International.
Myanmar Youth Vocational Institute (MYVI) is an officially registered Myanmar Charity Organisation (Registration No. 1/local/1158). Established in 2016 and formally registered in 2019, MYVI has successfully operated campuses in Pyin Oo Lwin, Mandalay, and Bagan, training more than 500 students to date.
MYVI’s work focuses especially on orphaned and vulnerable young people, helping them build sustainable futures through professional hospitality education, English language development, and essential life skills.
